VALLEY SCENE MAGAZINE CD REVIEW – MARCH 2007

Eileen Carey “Hearts of Time”
By: Bruce Pavalon

Woody Guthrie wrote, "I am out to sing songs that will prove to you that this is your world" This quote describes the spirit of Eileen Carey's upbeat and jovial country CD, Hearts of Time.

This self-affirming spirit is best realized on the four songs that Eileen Carey does not share a writing credit, all of them focusing her sanguine alto on true love. In Just to Get to You, she sings, "Ö you shine like a star in the Texas sky," and in It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This, "True love never says never."

It sounds fluffy, but there is a place and time for unbridled optimism. And these songs are quite catchy, particularly the up-tempo, All Tangled Up, which I believe is Eileen Carey's best vocal performance of the CD.

However, Eileen Carey's strength is also her weakness. Her saccharinity sometimes diminishes the reality of true love. To truly raise people up, you must understand the struggles of romantic relationships. Woody Guthrie follows the opening quote with, "Öther songs that I sing are made up for the most part by all sorts of folks just about like you."

Perhaps Eileen Carey intends on temporarily taking us to a fantasyland as her song Hollywood suggests, "And make believe in the land of OZ," but even Dorothy had to leave the color screen and return to Kansas. Fortunately, Eileen Carey does accomplish this with her most grounded and most catchy song, Lazy, "We'd be face down stuck in a rut if I leave it to you."

Good Time Charlie best sums up the CD. Charlie is a delusion guy with a Hollywood dream, running from the people who believe he is insane, "but they punch a clock to get what they got unhappy all the while." In Hearts of Time, Eileen Carey gives the listener a break from their daily grind.

Eileen Carey will be performing at the "Festival of the Egg" (an all-female music festival) at the Universal Bar and Grill on Lankershim Blvd. in North Hollywood, Wednesday, April 25.
